4.F.6 Integrated tagging of carp in the Murray-Darling basin

The need for an understanding of the movement dynamics of carp and associated triggers has been a priority for developing control strategies for some time. The IA CRC provides a perfect platform for integrating the efforts of multiple state and federal agencies in marking and recapturing (or re-locating) individual carp for an investigation into movement dynamics of carp in the Murray-Darling Basin. The aims of this project are to:

  • Determine temporal and spatial movement patterns of carp to understand when, where, and why carp move around the MDB over time scales relevant to their life-history.
  • Understand stock-structure and quantify movement of adults among stocks, and biological and environmental 'triggers' for such movement. 27
  • Investigate and quantify whether aspects of this movement behaviour create vulnerability to control within carp life history (eg. aggregation, passage through fishways etc).

The work is closely aligned with the native fish movement work currently funded by the Murray-Darling Basin Commission.
