Uptake of Products and Strategies
This program aims to capitalise on the research undertaken within other IA CRC Programs in order to accelerate the delivery of new, innovative and market driven products that have been demonstrated in practice and with scientific rigour, to be effective tools in reducing the impacts of invasive animals in Australasia. To achieve this, the Uptake of Products and Strategies Program bridges the research-to-market gap by resourcing the coordination of national and international registrations, commercialisation, market research and delivery of IA CRC market ready products to industry partners and other end-users.
A key objective in achieving this innovation is the direct engagement of local communities through demonstration sites, which showcase new ways of looking at cross-tenure and cross-discipline pest animal control techniques.
In addition, the wider community demands an increasing say in pest animal control, with issues such as animal welfare and conservation going beyond the individual land manager, local community or region, therefore this program also researches the drivers that influence the broader social conscience regarding the control of pest animals in order to better align the expectations and awareness of all Australians.
This proactive approach is a key element in our innovation chain that brings together a mix of stakeholders and we expect it to open up markets across Australasia and beyond for delivery of new products and services. For example, a new IA CRC feral pig bait developed for the Australian market has potential markets in NZ, Pacific Islands, UK and the USA. Not only could this develop a new export industry for Australia, it will also make large-scale manufacturing and supply to Australian producers a more viable enterprise and will offer the potential in the long-term for self-sustaining projects and technical support funded from local and export sales.
Demonstration sites
Demonstration sites are a key component of IA CRC research development and implementation. Sites include:
- Western Australia: Introduced predator control and sustained fauna recovery in south-west WA
- South Australia: ‘Repel the Invaders’: a management program for deer, pigs, goats and cats on Kangaroo Island
- Tasmania: Detecting Foxes
- Victoria: ‘Southern Ark’: benefiting the biodiversity of East Gippsland through fox control
- Queensland: Controlling feral pigs in tropical rainforest
- Australian Capital Territory: Engaging community interest in the impacts of invasive animals
- New South Wales / Queensland: wild canids management
Note that demonstration sites related to pest fish are managed by the Freshwater Products and Strategies Program. They include:
- Queensland: Albert-Logan catchment
- New South Wales: Lachlan catchment
- Tasmania: Lakes Sorell and Cresent
Specific research projects associated with the Uptake Program:
- New feral pig toxins, baits and delivery systems
- Molecular ecology of wild canids in Australia
- Bluehealer antidote®
- Human dimensions of invasive animal management
- Community awareness projects (ValueMetrics Australia)
- Commercialisation management: IA offshore and intellectual property management
Program newsletter:
The ‘Uptake Update’ newsletter is a regular series aiming to keep all stakeholders informed on project progress within this program. Each new issue features a different demonstration site or specific aspect of the program. Please email Keryn Lapidge if you would like to be added to the distribution list for future newsletters.
